We all like to think of Christmas as the Season of Goodwill but unfortunately for many they will experience the opposite as it is also the season when break ins increase significantly.  It is important to note that in the event of a break in you may be able to make an insurance claim for the loss of goods and / or damages to property.  Just remember though that when you take out your insurance you are often given a discount on your premium for confirming that you have a house alarm, locks on windows etc.  However, in the event of a break in, if you are not in the property and the alarm is not activated the Insurer will not pay out as you are in breach of your policy agreement by not having your alarm activated when the premises is empty.  One of the biggest mistakes people make in this modern social media frenzied world is to advertise their lives on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  Many people proudly boast pictures of their Christmas trees with presents piled high beneath.  This is an advertisement to the would be robber that you have goods easily available to steal.  Even more alarming are the numerous posts people make online stating they are away from home.  You may as well put a sign on your lawn saying “Come in and rob us you wont be disturbed”.  A break in can be a very traumatic and upsetting event an no amount of compensation from an insurance claim can make up for the loss of sense of security in your home so stay vigilant this Christmas, keep an eye out for vulnerable neighbours who may be targeted and be aware that when you post online you are advertising to the world!
