With all the recent floods and more storms looming on the horizon many people are asking what they can do to prevent flooding of their property. In some cases, unfortunately there is little that can be done to prevent a flood. However, steps can be taken to minimise the loss.
Before an imminent flood in your area you should check whether there is a flood emergency plan in your area and ensure you have all relevant emergency numbers recorded on your phone. Check your property for weak spots which might be vulnerable to flooding. Also check your insurance policy to see if you have cover for flood damage as many people in flood areas are no longer covered for flood damage so it is even more important to minimise the damage.
So how can you minimise your potential loss? Take the following steps to ensure that if you are affected by a flood your loss will be lessened. Ensure all your valuables are stored safely upstairs and in a single storey house store them as high as possible. If your property is prone to flooding, consider options for furnishings and floor coverings that are more durable i.e. floor tiles as opposed to carpets. Put sandbags at any openings where water could get in and don’t just assume the door is the only place water can enter. Be ready to evacuate at very short notice – this means having your medication to hand, having warm clothing ready, wellingtons if possible and any other items your family may need in an emergency. Know where to turn off your electricity or gas supplies in the event of water entering your home. If possible, move your car to higher ground. Outside your house make sure you put sandbags down on manholes etc to keep them sealed. If you are in danger of having to leave the property close off any flow valves to fuel containers and unplug any exterior electrical connections. Most importantly make sure you follow the advice of emergency services at all times and evacuate when you are instructed to do so.
If your property has been flooded and your return to inspect the damage, be aware that the danger is still present at this stage. Flood water can be contaminated with sewage, so it is important that you avoid direct contact with water that is contaminated. Don’t go into the property if electrical cables or sockets are still underwater. Ensure a qualified electrician checks and approves all electrics in the property before going near them. Always make sure that the water is safe to drink before using it.
