Burglary is becoming an increasing worry for households in Ireland. The Central Statistic Office figures for burglary for the first 3 quarters of 2019 reveal a total of 49,963 burglaries during this period which amounts to 183 per day in Ireland. Studies also reveal that the most common time for burglary is between the hours of 5pm and 11pm and that half of all burglaries occur while the occupant is in the home.
It is important therefore that we take steps to ensure we are protecting our homes to the best of our ability. The most obvious solution is to have a house alarm installed, but it is equally important to ensure that you make sure the alarm is activated when you leave the house even if it is for a short period of time. During the hours of darkness have your house well lit with lights on inside and external lights switched on, as houses that look unoccupied are more likely to be targeted. Don’t post your holidays, days out, trips away on social media because it is not just your friends who you are telling but literally the whole world. Finally, do not leave your spare keys outside the house “hidden”, they are generally not that difficult to find.
Remember to keep your property safe, be vigilant and if you see anything suspicious contact your local Garda Station.
