In November 2018 the Government launched it’s annual Be Winter Ready campaign. The campaign is a cross department collaboration with input from the Department for Rural and Community Development, the Department for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government with special responsibility for Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. The website offers advice to help communities prepare for and cope with severe weather events and works along side weather alerts from Met Eireann. Unfortunately we cannot control the weather and therefore we cannot prevent floods, snowfall, icy driving conditions, fallen trees, storm damage, frozen pipes and flash flooding but having the knowledge of who to contact and how to act in these events gives people the comfort and reassurance that they are not alone and help is out there for those who need it. The website also offers leaflets with the main information in an easily downloadable format so for those who may not have internet access you can print off a copy of the information and leave it with them. Our communities are the back bone of this country and it is important that we work as a community to keep ourselves safe and help those more vulnerable members of our society with information, support and practical help.
