Christmas is a time when we like to think of family sitting around a fire snuggled up against the cold harsh weather outside.  However, this also means it is a time when we are increasing the risk of fire in the home by lighting large open fires, using candles, Christmas tree lights and electric blankets.  Nobody wants to deal with the tragedy of a fire over the festive season so it’s important that you are aware of the increased risks and act responsibly to keep your home and family safe.

  • Make sure you have your chimney cleaned and checked annually by a registered chimney sweep.
  • Never leave fairy lights on in the house unattended or when you go to bed.
  • Don’t drape Christmas decorations near open flames.
  • Be conscious of where you are placing candles i.e. near fabrics etc. and never leave burning overnight.
  • Make sure electric blankets are not left on overnight, some now come with an automatic switch off after a period of time but older models have to be manually switched off. Ideally switch them on an hour before going to bed so they can be switched off when you get into bed.
  • Mobile phones and tablets should not be left on beds, cushions, pillows etc. while charging as they often overheat and can easily start a fire.
  • Don’t overload sockets and have multiple extension leads plugged into each other.
  • Make sure your fire / smoke alarms are working at all times.

If you are at home when a fire starts, immediately phone the emergency services and leave the property. Never re-enter a burning building. Stay safe this Christmas and enjoy the festive season as it should be.
